Upgrade your table saw. It’s easier than you think!
This simple diagram and materials list is included in the free downloadable pdf. (22 pages)
FYI: It generally takes about 5 minutes for the automatic email to arrive from VerySuperCool Tools containing the downloadable link.
If you have seen any of AskWoodMan’s guide rail fabrication videos, you already know how easy it is to make your own guide rails. We offer a downloadable pdf showing all the crucial dimensions you need to know to make sure your project is a success.
Everything in this pdf can also be found on our blog. You can also refer to the DIY GUIDE RAILS tab in the main menu of this website. We had so many request that we wanted to make it even easier for everyone to review and print this information in pdf form.

Plans look great, can’t wait to get started, but I have a question: If the angle iron is 3×3 and the vertical height of the tubing is 2″, that means One Inch of angle iron is exposed above the tubing, yet your sketch shows only 13/16ths is to be revealed to the top of the table. Does the vertical arm of the angle iron need trimmed down by 3/16ths? Thanks, Alan!

Admin AskWoodMan –
You are not reasoning this through correctly. 3-2- 1/4= 3/4 You did not take into account the 1/4 thickness of the angle iron. Look at the cross section diagram in the plans. When it all gets installed with the 13/16 step down from the top of saw to the top of tubing the angle iron will be 1/16 below the cast iron top. Allan

I should have probably bought a newer table saw but nostalgia got the best of me. This fence system is fantastic and as Allan suggested, I can attach it to another saw down the road if this one finally dies. I called Allan several times and he couldn’t have been more helpful, you can tell he has a real love for this stuff.

If you want to replace a rinky dink table saw guide rail try the Askwoodman.com design. Solid, easy to build and logical.

This is a fantastic system, and Allan has made the technical aspects of this less daunting. I Managed to get this put together in one afternoon and painted the next day. Allan was quick to answer my question about using thicker tube steel because my local steel yard had long drops at cheaper rates. (3/16″ Tube works great)

THE GUIDE
I used this downloadable guide to undertake fabricating my own guide rail. I also supplemented this guide with the AskWoodMan/VSCTools video tutorials on building your own guide rails, and recommend people watch those too. This is a great resource for those looking to tackle their own build.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
Like other reviewers mentioned, Allan responded to my e-mails and phone calls, personally. The amount of knowledge that Allan brings to the table coupled with his drive to help others is admirable. The level of customer service VSC Tools provides sets the bar high.
LESSONS LEARNED
I picked up some new tools for this build according to the written and video tutorials. I bought a cheap bench top drill press off of CList, a cheap angle grinder from a garage sale, and other miscellaneous things (drill bits/taps/scribes/ transfer punches). Since they were more readily available to me and I saw Allan use SHCS for bolting the tubing to the angle iron in some of his videos, I used those instead of the hex head screws. The message I’m trying to convey is that you don’t need professional grade tools to take on this project, you just need to be thrifty and creative. I will mention that the CX-DN disc recommended in the “PREPPING THE STEEL” section was an excellent buy – made cleaning/descaling a lot quicker. From one of my e-mail conversations with Allan, in case someone was fretting about it like me, the step down spacing of EXACTLY 13/16″ can be slightly larger versus smaller due to the adjustability of the nylon set screws of the VSC Tools T-Square as long as the spacers are equivalent (*I’m not sure whether other fence systems have that forgiveness). My parallel spacing consisted of using a hardwood spacer and it was difficult to remove after final tightening. I’ve seen some people use playing cards as an extra spacer then slipped them out to create more room to remove the 3/4″ spacer, but the paint was still a little tacky because I’m impatient; so I recommend setting the spacer closer to the top of the tube and avoid trying to crush the spacers with clamps. It may be rookie mistakes, but in case anybody finds the same pitfalls, those are some that I thought were notable.
